What we like:

Well-sourced and delicious meals; more affordable than Heather’s Choice.

What we don’t:

Supply can be low in the U.S.

The company was founded in the southwest region located in the southwest of England, Firepot is fresh appearing within the U.S., now being offered by the giant of outdoor gear REI. We tried a few of their menus during a recent trip to backpack in Patagonia and were amazed by what the tiny company has created. Their meals represent a significant trend in the food scene in the backcountry that we’re thrilled about that focuses on fresh, natural ingredients and well-thought-out flavor combinations. The majority of their ingredients come from the region around the headquarters, the meals at Firepot are among the finest we’ve had, and they offer many vegan and gluten-free choices as well.

Firepot competes with Heather’s Choice to be one of the most nutritious and well-sourced foods available. With just 114 calories per ounce it’s not as powerful as Heather’s Choice. This could be a concern for those who are particularly concerned with maintaining a low weight pack. However there are more calories in a single pouch–ours averaged 770 calories for each meal. This is a substantially more price overall (especially when you’re sharing your meal with friends or consuming an adequate quantity in food). Heather’s Choice meals are somewhat easier to locate on the shelves in The U.S., but we anticipate seeing more and more Firepot appear on the shelves over time. Overall they’re an excellent brand to keep in your list of choices, and when you buy on the internet (a little difficult for those from the States) You’ll also have the possibility of compostable packaging as well.
